The pastel painting seen above is of a beautiful Rottweiler dog, and is 24" by 18" in size. The photo to the right is the original photo that Julie used to create the work. When she came to paint the dog, she repositioned the left arm so that it appeared in a more natural pose.

There are a number of options available when commissioning a painting of your dog. For example, it's possible to order a head and shoulders work on a plain background, or commission a more elaborate painting where we see the full body of the dog and some kind of background - e.g. a countryside scene or a view of a beach. Portraits can also feature a number of dogs together, either as head and shoulders or full body works. These works are usually undertaken on the 24" by 18" size.

It's possible to create a portrait with or without the bridal. (The horse painting on the right has a bridal left on). Click here if you'd like to find out more about commissioning a horse painting and more about the options available.

Here are three tips for taking good photos to work from:-

1. Avoid using flash - try to take your photos in natural daylight

2. Get down at the animals level

3. Get reasonably close so the subject more or less fills the photo.

Pastel paintings of cats can be in full body or as head and shoulder portraits. Normally these kind of subjects work well at the 12" by 10" size for head and shoulder studies, and 16" by 12" for painting the cat in full body.
