Pugs are full of personality, with their expressive faces, distinctive wrinkles and unmistakable charm. Their compact features and soulful expressions make them particularly engaging subjects for portraiture, where even the smallest details can bring their character to life.
From the soft folds around the face to the subtle variations in tone across a fawn or black coat, pugs offer a wonderful opportunity to explore texture and expression in pastel. Over the years I have created many pug portraits and paintings, each drawn carefully from photographs supplied by the owner, capturing both likeness and individuality.
Although the breed’s coat may appear simple at first glance, it often contains subtle variations in colour and tone that bring the portrait to life.
Fawn Pug Portrait
As I painted Edward, a beautiful fawn pug, I focused on capturing the gentle expression and distinctive features that make this breed so special. I gradually built layers of pastel to create the soft shading across the face and the delicate folds of the skin, seeking to create a natural sense of depth. Fawn pugs often have warm cream and apricot tones in their coats, contrasted by the darker mask around the muzzle and ears. These variations make them particularly rewarding to paint.

Group portraits can be especially charming with pugs, as their personalities are often so varied and expressive. In this portrait, a mix of fawn and black pugs sit together, each with their own unique expression. The owner sent me several photos of the pugs individually. I then assembled them together using the natural contrast between the lighter and darker coats to create a balanced composition. The repetition of those characteristic pug features helped to give the portrait a sense of unity, and I added some red cushions in the background to create a warm and homely scene.
These types of portraits are a lovely way to capture multiple dogs together in a single artwork.

Creating a Pug Portrait from Your Photos
Every portrait I create is drawn by hand in soft pastel from photographs provided by the customer. Clear, well-lit images are especially helpful, as they allow me to see the subtle details of expression, coat colour and markings.
If you have several photographs, I am happy to help you choose the most suitable ones. Often one image may capture the expression beautifully while another shows the colouring more clearly, and these details can be combined to create a balanced portrait.

Clear photographs taken in natural light are ideal, as they show the true colours and details of your pug’s face. Close-up images are particularly helpful for capturing expression, but I can also work from multiple photos if needed.
How long does a pug portrait take?
Most portraits are completed within three to four weeks from confirmation of your order. During busy periods, such as before Christmas, it is always best to book early.
What size is best for a pug portrait?
For a classic head and shoulders portrait, popular sizes are 10” x 8” or 12” x 9”. For a full body composition, a larger size such as 16” x 12” works particularly well.

Commission Your Pug Portrait
Commissioning a pug portrait is a surprisingly simple process. You can begin by sending a few photographs of your dog, and then I will advise on the most suitable composition and size.
Once we have agreed on the main image I will be working from, most portraits are completed within three to four weeks, depending on availability. Once finished, your artwork is carefully packaged and delivered safely to you, whether you are based in the UK or overseas.
