Basset Hound Portraits & Paintings
Basset Hounds have such a distinctive and endearing appearance, with their long ears, soulful eyes and gentle expressions. There is often a quiet dignity about them, combined with a slightly wistful look that makes them especially appealing as portrait subjects.
Their loose skin, soft folds and subtle colour variations offer wonderful opportunities for creating depth and character in both portrait drawings and pastel paintings. Each Basset Hound has its own unique expression, and capturing that individuality is always at the heart of my work.
Red and White Basset Hound Portrait
This red and white Basset Hound portrait focuses on the rich warmth of the coat, balanced with softer white areas to create a gentle, natural feel. I gave particular attention to the eyes and the characteristic folds around the face, so as I could convey the thoughtful and slightly wistful expression that is so typical of the breed.
Lemon and White Basset Hound Painting
Lemon and white Basset Hounds have a lighter, softer colouring, which gives their portraits a more delicate atmosphere.
For this painting, I choose the reference photo carefully, in order to capture the dog looking slightly upwards. This angle helps to emphasise the eyes and creates a particularly endearing expression.
When selecting photographs for a portrait, clear lighting and a natural pose are especially important. Images that show the dog’s character — whether alert, relaxed or curious — tend to work best.

Basset Hound Portrait with Personal Details
Including personal details such as collars, tags or other accessories can add an extra layer of meaning to a portrait.
In this study of Dinsdale, the collar and tag are carefully incorporated to complement the composition, helping to create a portrait that feels both personal and recognisable to the owner.
