Bearded Collie Portraits & Paintings
The Bearded Collie is a wonderfully characterful breed, known for its long, flowing coat and lively, expressive face. Their shaggy fur and distinctive “beard” give them a charming appearance that is instantly recognisable.
These textured coats make the breed particularly interesting to portray in pastel, where layers of soft colour can be built gradually to capture the movement and softness of the fur. Over the years I have created several Bearded Collie portraits and Bearded Collie paintings, each drawn carefully from photographs supplied by the owner.
Although the breed’s coat may appear simple at first glance, it often contains subtle variations in colour and tone that bring the portrait to life.
This portrait shows a fawn Bearded Collie, whose warm cream and golden tones create a beautifully soft appearance. The flowing coat around the muzzle and chest forms the distinctive beard that gives the breed its name. Pastel is particularly well suited to portraying this type of coat, allowing fine strands of fur and subtle highlights to be built gradually until the texture feels natural and lifelike.
Black and White Bearded Collie Portrait
The black Bearded Collie has a striking contrast between the darker patches of fur and the lighter areas around the face and chest. These variations in tone help define the structure of the dog’s head and expression.
In this portrait, the darker markings around the ear frame the face beautifully, while I was able to portray the lighter beard and muzzle to create a gentle softness that is typical of the breed.
