Dalmatian Portraits & Paintings
Dalmatians are one of the most visually distinctive dog breeds, instantly recognisable for their striking spotted coats and elegant build. Each dog’s markings are entirely unique, which makes every portrait a fascinating and individual study.
The patterns within a Dalmatian’s coat require careful observation, as no two spots are ever quite the same. In pastel, these markings can be built up gradually, allowing the contrast between the white coat and darker spots to feel natural and well balanced. Over the years I have created many Dalmatian portraits and paintings, each drawn from photographs to capture both the pattern and the personality of the dog.
White and Liver Dalmatian Portrait
This was a beautiful white and liver Dalmatian to work on, where the spots appeared in mellow brown tones rather than black. I was able to give the portrait a warm, natural feel by drawing these softer markings against the pale coat. Capturing the variation in these tones is an important part of the process, ensuring the coat retains depth and realism rather than appearing flat.
White and Black Dalmatian Portrait
The classic white and black Dalmatian has a more defined contrast, with bold black markings that stand out clearly against the white coat.
In this side profile portrait, the placement of the spots helps to define the structure of the head and neck, while the softer shading keeps the overall appearance balanced and lifelike.
Including Personal Details in a Portrait
Many clients like to include small personal details that make their portrait feel even more meaningful. These might include collars, tags, bandanas or favourite toys.
In this portrait of Domino, I was asked to add his collar and colourful tag to the work. This suggestion by the owner added a lovely personal touch and helped to tell his story. Details like these can be incorporated naturally into the composition and often become a special part of the finished artwork. You can read more about these options on my custom pet portrait page.
Dalmatian Cross Portrait (Goldmation)
Crossbreeds can make particularly interesting portrait subjects, combining features from different breeds into one unique appearance.
This Goldmation—a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Dalmatian—has a softer coat texture combined with the distinctive spotted markings of the Dalmatian. Portraits like this highlight how individual and varied each dog can be.
Collected the portrait today and have taken it to be framed. You’ve captured the essence of Barney perfectly and if that doesn’t bring a tear to Sue’s eye I will be surprised. Thank you for creating a beautiful portrait.

Creating a Dalmatian Portrait from Your Photos
All portraits are drawn by hand in soft pastel from photographs you provide. Clear images taken in natural light are especially helpful, as they show the true pattern and tone of the coat.
With Dalmatians in particular, accurate reference images are important so that the unique placement of markings is faithfully captured in the finished portrait. When you take your photos of your dog, please try and get down at your pets level. This is will help avoid distortions and create a natural angle to create the work from.
