Cocker Spaniel Portraits & Paintings

Cocker Spaniels are such expressive and affectionate dogs, and their gentle nature often shines through beautifully in portraiture. Their long, flowing ears, soft feathered coats and warm, soulful eyes make them particularly rewarding subjects to depict in pastel. Over the years I have created many Cocker Spaniel portraits and Cocker Spaniel paintings, each drawn carefully from photographs supplied by the owner. Whether portraying a lively working spaniel or a calm companion resting at home, my aim is always to capture both the character and the quiet sensitivity that make this breed so loved.

Cocker Spaniel Portrait

This portrait of Rino, a handsome white and tan Cocker Spaniel, shows the breed’s graceful form in a full body composition. Cocker Spaniels have beautifully textured coats that respond wonderfully to pastel, allowing soft layers of colour to build depth and natural movement in the fur. Full body portraits like this can show the dog’s posture and personality, while still allowing the viewer to focus on the gentle expression that is so typical of the breed.

It always means a great deal to me when clients share their thoughts after receiving their portrait. Here was the response I received after posting Rino out to Scotland:

We have received the portrait of Rino and we framed it immediately, we are delighted with it and it is getting pride of place in the living room. It looks so like him, we're all amazed at how good it is. Thank you very much for giving us the perfect reminder of our boy.

Chocolate Cocker Spaniel Portrait

The chocolate Cocker Spaniel has particularly rich colouring, with warm brown tones that can appear almost mahogany in certain lights. These deep hues create beautiful contrasts in pastel and allow the subtle highlights within the coat to emerge gradually as the layers are built.

In this portrait I loved working on the soft texture of Miffy's ears and the calm attentiveness in her expression, both of which are characteristic of this elegant spaniel.

Blue Roan Cocker Spaniel Portrait

The blue roan Cocker Spaniel has one of the most distinctive coats of the breed. The mix of dark and light hairs creates a beautifully speckled appearance which can be fascinating to recreate in pastel.

Summer’s portrait allowed me to explore these subtle variations in colour, blending cool greys, blues and silvery tones to reflect the delicate patterning that makes blue roan spaniels so recognisable.

Cocker Spaniel Portraits with Backgrounds

While many portraits are created against a simple background, some owners enjoy including scenery that reflects a favourite place or setting.

In this portrait of Alfie, another blue roan Cocker, the owner aksed if he could be depicted outdoors with soft greenery and distant trees behind. This helped to create a natural atmosphere that complements the dog’s colouring - backgrounds like this can help add context and storytelling to a portrait. You can read more about these options in my guide to backgrounds for pet portraits.

Golden Cocker Spaniel Puppy Portrait

Puppies make particularly charming portrait subjects, and the golden Cocker Spaniel has a wonderfully soft coat and gentle expression. In this portrait, Izzy is shown sitting on an idyllic countryside walk, capturing the innocence and curiosity that puppies often display.

Some clients commission portraits like this to celebrate a young dog, while others choose them as a lasting tribute to a beloved companion. If you would like to learn more about this, you may find my page about memorial pet portraits helpful.

Creating a Cocker Spaniel Portrait from Your Photos

All of my portraits begin with the photographs you provide. Images taken in natural light often work particularly well, as they reveal the true colour of the coat and the expression in the eyes.

Sometimes one photograph captures a wonderful pose while another shows the markings more clearly. By studying several images I can design a composition that reflects the dog naturally and accurately.

Working in soft pastel allows me to gradually build the layers of colour and texture needed to portray the silky coats and gentle expressions that Cocker Spaniels are known for.

Group Portraits of Cocker Spaniels

Many families share their homes with more than one dog, and group portraits can be a lovely way to celebrate that bond. These portraits allow each dog’s personality to be shown while creating a harmonious composition.

In this example, I was asked to depict Rosie, a black and tan Cocker Spaniel sitting alongside her golden companion, Rusty. Their contrasting colours and expressions work beautifully together, and this really helped to create a balanced and engaging portrait.

A Note from Julie

Hi, and welcome to my site! During my career as a professional pet portrait artist I have created hundreds of commissioned portraits for clients across the UK and internationally. Working in traditional pastel allows me to build delicate layers of colour and detail, capturing the beauty and individuality of each animal.

Cocker Spaniels are particularly enjoyable to depict because of their expressive faces and flowing coats. Their gentle nature and loyal temperament often seem to shine through in a portrait, making them wonderful subjects to work with.
