Labrador Portraits & Labrador Paintings

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most loved breeds in the world, and it’s easy to see why. Their gentle nature, loyal temperament and deep, intelligent eyes make them such a joy to paint. I have created many Labrador portraits over the years – from playful young black labs to wise old chocolate companions and soft, creamy yellow Labradors with the kindest expressions. Each Labrador painting I create is carefully hand drawn in pastel from your own photographs, capturing not only their likeness but their spirit. You can also explore many other examples of my dog portraits here. If you are considering a Labrador portrait, you are very welcome to contact me to discuss ideas.

Painting Black, Chocolate & Yellow Labradors

Labradors are most commonly seen in three colours – black, chocolate and yellow – and each has its own unique challenges and beauty when translated into pastel.

Black Labrador Portraits

A black Labrador painting is all about subtle light and reflection. Their coats are never simply “black”; they hold tones of blue, violet and warm browns within the fur. I carefully layer the pastels to build depth so that the coat appears glossy and full of life rather than flat.

Chocolate Labrador Portraits

These two chocolate labs were such a pleasure to draw. There was a calm attentiveness about Rogan, as though he were listening for something just beyond the frame. I chose this gentle side profile because it showed his thoughtful nature and gave the portrait a quiet dignity that really suited him.

Poppy's beautiful amber eyes had a softness and intelligence that immediately connected with me as I worked, and it was a joy to explore the warm undertones and rich mahogany shades of her coat. The owner also asked for her special red collar and tag to be included. Personal features like these can make a portrait feel very special.

Yellow Labrador Portraits

Yellow Labradors have the gentlest colouring of all. A yellow Labrador painting often carries beautiful cream, honey and pale golden tones. I find their expressions particularly soulful; there is something very open and trusting in their gaze. The head studies shown here demonstrate how a simple background can really allow their features to shine.

Tanya had the most beautifully soft cream coat, and I loved building up the subtle layers of warmth around her muzzle and ears to give her that gentle glow. There is such a quiet sweetness in the way she tilts her head, as though she is patiently waiting for a familiar voice or the promise of a walk.

Head Studies or Full Body Labrador Portraits?

Many clients choose a classic head and shoulders Labrador portrait, as this allows me to focus closely on the eyes and expression. For these, I usually recommend a 16” by 12” or 18” by 14” size.

For a more complete composition – perhaps showing your Labrador seated proudly or standing in a favourite landscape – a larger 20” by 16” or 24” by 18” format works beautifully. The full body black Labrador shown above is a lovely example of how posture and stance can tell so much about personality.

The Fox Red Labrador

Although many people search for a “Labrador drawing” or “Labrador painting”, all of my portraits are individually hand drawn in professional artist pastels (you can learn more about what makes pastel an ideal medium for portraiture here in my FAQ's). I work carefully from your photographs, combining images if needed, adjusting lighting and refining details to create a finished Labrador portrait that feels both lifelike and timeless.

Whether you have:

A sleek working black lab,

A gentle family yellow Labrador,

the striking warm tones of a red fox Labrador (a beautiful deeper shade of yellow),

or a richly coloured chocolate companion,

I take great care to capture the subtle variations in their coat colour, the warmth of their eyes and the unique character that makes your Labrador so special.

Memorial Labrador Portraits

Labradors become such an integral part of family life. They are assistance dogs, guide dogs, rescue companions and loyal friends. I grew up with a lab cross called Sally, and I still remember her quiet devotion and her enthusiasm for a game of ball. For many families, a Labrador portrait becomes a cherished reminder of a beloved companion who gave unconditional love.

Collars, tags, favourite toys or meaningful backgrounds can all be incorporated into your Labrador painting if you wish.

Thank you so much for your beautiful, touching portrait of Maddy. It was sad to think we had so few photos of her, but thanks to you we will now have something wonderful to remember her by.

A Note from Julie

Hello, and thank you for visiting my site. For me, the joy of portraiture lies in capturing not just how a pet looks, but the quiet personality and spirit that make them such a beloved companion. Working in pastel allows me to build soft layers of colour and detail, carefully studying each animal so their expression and character come through naturally in the portrait. My hope is always that the finished artwork feels personal, meaningful, and something you will treasure for many years.

If you’d like to hear a little more about my story and how I create my portraits, please do watch my short introduction video here.
